~You are on your way: How exactly does one start a wallpapering business? Jim gives some tips about how to get your new business off the ground. Even if you already have a home contracting business you can get some tips on breaking into this trade.
I am a second generation paperhanger in the New York City Area. My father started in the business in 1936 and I joined him as an apprentice in 1977. Since that time I have installed almost every type of wallcovering imaginable since my dad retired in 1985.
In 2001 I began writing a column for Painting & Wallcovering Contractor Magazine and since 2005 began consulting with wallcovering manufacturers to improve their products.
In the late 1990's wallpaper began to disappear as a home decor choice to such an extent that all three schools of paperhanging in the USA went out of business. Currently there is no paperhanging school you can go to for vocational training in this trade. In the early 2000's both residential and commercial wallpapering started a comeback in popularity and today there is a growing shortage of skilled paperhanging tradespeople.
I began making "how to install wallpaper" video tutorials in 2010 with www.installcommercialwallcovering.com and www.install-delicate-highend-wallcoverings.com
But these video guides were geared towards upgrading the skills of contractors who already knew the basics and had some experience. With this latest comprehensive video course, Wallpapering Essentials, I start from the very beginning and bring the student along as a "virtual apprentice" on real world paperhanging jobs so that you can learn to install wallcoverings step by step.
With this intensive 12 hour/ 6 DVD course, I have included every type of skill required in wallcovering installation for someone to set out on their own and start their own paperhanging business or to add wallpapering services to any existing home contracting business seeking to branch out.
